Why Are More People Choosing Fragrance-Free Skin Care?

Ingredients used in fragrance-free skin care products, including fresh goat milk, oats, cocoa butter, and shea butter.

More people than ever are seeking fragrance-free skin care products as awareness of fragrance sensitivity, ingredient sensitivities, and conditions such as Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS) continues to grow. As consumers become more mindful of the products they use every day, many are looking for simpler skincare routines and products with fewer added ingredients.

For our family, that journey became personal.

Our Family’s Experience with Fragrance Sensitivity

Both Ashley and Mike experienced MCAS symptoms while navigating mold illness. Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS) is a condition associated with an overactive immune response that can contribute to heightened sensitivities to foods, environmental triggers, and everyday products.

During that time, we became more aware of how differently our bodies responded to everyday foods, personal care products, and environmental triggers.

Ashley has always loved the scents of our essential oil blends, especially our Rosemary & Sage Body Butter. In fact, it remains one of the products she reaches for most often today. However, during periods of heightened sensitivity, she found herself reaching for simpler products with fewer ingredients and no added scent. Over time, she noticed she simply felt better when using some of our most basic fragrance free skin care products.

Mike’s experience looked a little different. While many of his sensitivities were more food-related, the journey taught both of us that every person responds differently. What works wonderfully for one person may not be the right fit for another.

That experience reinforced something we already believed: people deserve options. Some customers love the experience of carefully crafted essential oil blends. Others need skincare that is as simple as possible. Both approaches have a place.

As we learned more about sensitivities, we also began to understand why certain scents that seem perfectly harmless to one person might be problematic for another.

What Symptoms Can Fragrances and Essential Oils Trigger?

Not everyone reacts to fragrances or essential oils the same way. Many people enjoy scented products without any issues. However, others find that certain scents can contribute to discomfort or irritation.

Some commonly reported reactions include:

  • Skin irritation, redness, or itching

  • Dryness or increased skin sensitivity

  • Headaches triggered by strong scents

  • Eye, nose, or throat irritation

  • Respiratory discomfort in sensitive individuals

  • Feeling overwhelmed by certain scents during periods of heightened sensitivity

For some people, these reactions occur primarily with synthetic fragrances. For others, even natural ingredients such as essential oils may become difficult to tolerate during certain seasons of life.

This doesn’t necessarily mean an ingredient is harmful. Rather, it highlights how different every person can be and why having fragrance-free skincare options available is important for those with sensitivities.

These experiences aren’t as uncommon as many people might think.

Understanding Fragrance Sensitivity and Scent Sensitivities

A 2019 international study found that 32.2% of adults across the United States, Australia, the United Kingdom, and Sweden reported fragrance sensitivity, meaning they experienced adverse health effects from fragranced consumer products. This highlights how common fragrance sensitivity may be and why more consumers are seeking fragrance-free alternatives.

At the same time, awareness of conditions such as MCAS has increased dramatically. While not everyone with fragrance sensitivity has MCAS, many people dealing with chronic illness, environmental sensitivities, autoimmune challenges, or skin conditions report becoming more reactive to scents over time.

As a result, consumers are increasingly seeking fragrance-free skin care products that eliminate unnecessary ingredients and focus on simple, recognizable components.

Why We Continue to Offer Fragrance Free Skin Care Products

One thing we’ve learned from talking with customers is that fragrance sensitivity is far more common than many people realize.

At virtually every farmers market we attend, at least one person asks:

“Do you have anything unscented?”

Sometimes they’re looking for products for themselves. Other times they’re shopping for a spouse, child, parent, or friend who struggles with sensitivities.

In fact, two of our best-selling soaps are completely fragrance-free: Cocoa Butter & Oats Goat Milk Soap and Milk & Oats Goat Milk Soap. These customer favorites are part of our fragrance-free skin care collection designed for those who prefer products without added scent.

We’ve even had customers tell us:

“I’ve been looking everywhere for an unscented soap.”

Many customers are surprised by this. They assume fragrance-free products won’t be enjoyable to use. In reality, one of the biggest misconceptions about fragrance-free skincare is that it lacks any scent or sensory experience at all.

Fragrance Free Skin Care Doesn’t Have to Be Boring

One misconception is that fragrance-free products are completely scentless.

In reality, many natural ingredients have subtle aromas of their own.

Our Milk & Oats Goat Milk Soap has a clean, comforting scent from fresh goat milk sourced from a local Midwest farm and wholesome oats. Our Cocoa Butter & Oats Goat Milk Soap offers a naturally warm aroma from rich cocoa butter. Neither contains added essential oils, yet both have become customer favorites.

The same is true for our fragrance-free body butters. Unrefined butters and nourishing oils bring their own gentle earthy character without the need for added scents.

At Nature Inspired, we use pure essential oils when creating scented products and never use synthetic fragrance oils. At the same time, we understand that some people prefer—or need—products with no added scent at all. That’s why we’re proud to offer both.

Why Fragrance Free Skin Care is Growing in Popularity

Many people choose fragrance-free skin care because they want products without added scents. Others are looking for skincare made with fewer ingredients and a more straightforward approach.

Some are managing sensitive skin. Others are navigating environmental sensitivities or simply trying to reduce potential triggers in their daily routines.

Regardless of the reason, the growing demand for fragrance-free skin care reflects a broader movement toward simplicity, transparency, and mindful ingredient choices.

Searches for fragrance-free skin care products, unscented soap, and fragrance-free body care continue to increase as consumers become more aware of ingredient sensitivities, fragrance sensitivity, and the ingredients they use every day.
